Prosper ISD Gifted & CogAT Testing — Parent FAQs
Key dates for Prosper ISD families
- November 30–December 11, 2026: Grades 2 and 4 districtwide CogAT - All second- and fourth-grade students are automatically tested with the CogAT during this districtwide window. Services begin August 2027.
- January 20–February 19, 2027: Referred students evaluation window - Students in other grades may be evaluated after a referral. Referral forms must be filled out during the referral window. Services begin following the placement decision.
A student may be referred for and take a standardized ability test only once per academic year. Always confirm dates and details with your child’s school or the Gifted and Talented office.
Who Takes the CogAT?
All second-grade students are automatically tested.
All fourth-grade students are automatically tested.
The districtwide CogAT window is November 30–December 11, 2026.
Students tested in December are not retested on the same assessment during the spring evaluation window.
Students in other grades must be referred to be tested during the Spring of 2027 evaluation window.
How Does Identification Work?
Prosper ISD reviews multiple measures rather than relying on one test score. Evidence may include ability and achievement results, student work, and parent and teacher input. The placement committee determines whether the student demonstrates a need for gifted program services.
Placement decisions are shared electronically. Parents have 10 business days after notification to appeal a decision.

What Happens if My Child Is Identified?
Identified students receive gifted services designed to provide greater depth, complexity, creativity, and challenge. At the elementary level, students participate in campus-based gifted instruction and are grouped with other gifted learners for appropriate differentiation.
What Does the CogAT Measure?
The CogAT measures how students reason and solve unfamiliar problems in three areas:
- Verbal reasoning: word relationships, analogies, and classification
- Quantitative reasoning: number relationships, patterns, and problem-solving
- Nonverbal reasoning: visual patterns, figure analogies, and spatial relationships
CogAT Testing Format
The CogAT assesses your child's cognitive development in three key areas: verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal abilities. Rather than focusing on academic knowledge, it evaluates reasoning skills that your child uses to solve problems and think critically.
Note: There are some variances in the testing format for students in grades 3 and up. If your child is in grades 3–5, click on the Level 3–5 tab below to learn more about the test format for those grades.

How to Prepare for Prosper ISD CogAT Testing
Help your child prepare for the CogAT by building verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning skills rather than memorizing a single question type.
- Practice verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning regularly.
- Use grade-appropriate analogies, classifications, number patterns, and visual puzzles.
