- Fall 2026: Screening and referral begin - Schools begin the year's gifted screening and referral activities. Families should ask their school about campus-specific screening procedures and timelines.
- Grade 1: Districtwide ability screening - M-DCPS has used a districtwide nonverbal ability screener in Grade 1 to identify students who may need further gifted evaluation. The exact 2026-27 administration dates should be confirmed with the school.
- After a referral: School data review - The school reviews classroom performance, assessment data, teacher information, and the Gifted Checklist to determine whether additional evaluation is warranted.
- After evaluation: Eligibility staffing - An eligibility staffing reviews the evaluation results and other evidence to determine whether the student qualifies for gifted services.
M-DCPS has not yet published a clearly accessible 2026-27 gifted-testing calendar naming every assessment used in each grade. Families should confirm the exact test with their child's school.
How Does the Gifted Referral Process Work?
A student showing gifted characteristics may be referred for review. The teacher completes a Gifted Checklist and the school reviews available student data.
The school may refer the student for psychological testing or review an eligible private psychological evaluation. An eligibility staffing is held after the evaluation process.
If eligible, the student may be placed in the school's gifted program with parent participation in the placement process.
