San Diego Unified GATE & CogAT — Parent FAQs
Key dates for SDUSD families
- January–March 2027: Grade 2 CogAT / GATE testing - Grade 2 students are expected to take the CogAT at their school. Exact dates may vary by campus.
- Spring 2027: Grade 5 retesting and new students - Eligible Grade 5 students may be considered for retesting, and students in Grades 3–5 who are new to the district may also be tested.
- About two months after testing: Results notification - Families generally receive their child's GATE assessment results from the district or school.
The San Diego Unified School District 2026–27 Elementary Testing Calendar lists the Grade 2 GATE testing window as January–March 2027. Check with your neighborhood school directly for exact dates and testing information.
Who Takes the CogAT?
Every Grade 2 student is offered GATE testing.
A Grade 5 student may be reviewed for retesting if district criteria are met.
Students in Grades 3–5 who are new to San Diego Unified may be tested when their school conducts GATE testing.
A student is generally administered no more than two GATE assessments.
How Does GATE Identification Work?
San Diego Unified uses a multi-criterion eligibility matrix. CogAT provides the ability measure, while the district also considers academic achievement and other student circumstances that may affect opportunity or performance.
This broader review is intended to identify both high-achieving students and students with advanced potential whose abilities may not be fully reflected by classroom performance alone.

What Happens if My Child Is Identified?
GATE Cluster: Gifted students learn in classrooms that include a group of GATE-identified and other high-ability students. Teachers use differentiated instruction, advanced materials, flexible grouping, inquiry, and higher-order problem-solving.
GATE Seminar: Students with exceptionally advanced learning needs may qualify for Seminar classes at designated schools. These classes provide a faster pace, greater depth and complexity, and instruction with similarly advanced peers.
What Does the CogAT Measure?
The CogAT measures how students reason and solve unfamiliar problems in three areas:
- Verbal reasoning: word relationships, analogies, and classification
- Quantitative reasoning: number patterns, relationships, and problem-solving
- Nonverbal reasoning: figure patterns, matrices, classification, and spatial thinking
CogAT Testing Format
The CogAT assesses your child's cognitive development in three key areas: verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal abilities. Rather than focusing on academic knowledge, it evaluates reasoning skills that your child uses to solve problems and think critically.

Which CogAT level should my child prepare for?
The CogAT level for each grade is determined by the school district. Based on recommendations from Riverside Insights, the following table shows the typical CogAT level for San Diego Unified Grade 2 GATE screening:

How to Prepare for San Diego Unified CogAT Testing
Help your child prepare for the CogAT by building broad reasoning skills rather than memorizing a single question type.
- Practice verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning rather than memorizing answers.
- Use age-appropriate analogies, classifications, number patterns, matrices, and spatial puzzles.
- Review missed questions so your child understands the reasoning behind the correct answer.
- Continue building classroom reading and mathematics skills because the district uses multiple criteria.
- Use occasional timed practice to build focus, pacing, and confidence.

Quick FAQs
Does San Diego Unified use the CogAT? Yes. CogAT is the ability assessment used as part of the district's GATE identification process.
Does every Grade 2 student take the test? Every Grade 2 student is offered GATE testing. Families should follow school instructions regarding participation or opting out.
